Les Miserables: new pictures from the BBC adaptation
Have a shufty at these fresh new images from BBC One’s forthcoming adaptation of Les Miserables…
The BBC doesn’t only have The War Of The Worlds up its voluminous sleeve for this winter’s big-budget period viewing, there’s also a star-stuffed new adaptation of Les Miserables.
Period drama maestro Andrew Davies, who’s adapted everyone from Dickens to Austen to Thackeray to Gaskell, and a fair few writers who are still walking around drinking lattes to this day, has written the six-part series. It’s an adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel rather than the famous stage musical, so don’t expect a lot of jazz hands and rat-a-tatting with this one.
Les Miserables is the story, if you’re unfamiliar, of protagonist Jean Valjean, an ex-convict, and antagonist Javert, the officer set on returning him to prison, all set against the backdrop of a France in political turmoil. According to the official press bumf, the series will explore the themes of Hugo’s novel “with striking intensity and contemporary resonance.”
“The six part television adaptation of the renowned book will vividly and faithfully bring to life the vibrant and engaging characters, the spectacular and authentic imagery and, above all, the incredible yet accessible story that was Hugo’s lifework.”
Set to appear are Dominic West, David Oyelowo, Lily Collins, Adeel Akhtar, Olivia Colman and many more. Tom Shankland, whose work was most recently seen in another ambitious literary adaptation by the BBC, The City And The City, has directed all six episodes.

New poster for DC TV Arrowverse Elseworlds Crossover
Here’s an official poster for the Arrowverse crossover, Elseworlds, along with details of Superman’s new look…
Arrow’s Stephen Amell has been pulling double time both starring in and drumming up publicity around this winter’s DC Arrowverse crossover event. After tantalising us with a glimpse at Tyler Hoechlin’s new-look Superman suit (see below), he’s also released this look at a brand new poster…

There’s a lot to look forward to when the upcoming DC TV Arrowverse crossover, known as “Elseworlds” kicks off in December. One of the key appeals here is not only the eagerly anticipated introduction of Ruby Rose as Batwoman (not to mention the apparent elements of Mr Freeze’s origin story and a villain from Arkham Asylum), but we’re also getting the return of Tyler Hoechlin as Superman and the introduction of Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane.
But it looks like that for at least some of Hoechlin’s screen time as Superman, he won’t be wearing the traditional red and blue costume. Instead, he’ll be in the kind of black and silver number usually associated with the one he wears after he returned from the dead after getting his caped ass handed to him by Doomsday. The suit has only been hinted at in live action once before (in an episode of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, if you can believe that), and very nearly made an appearance in the Justice League movie, but other than that, it has only graced the comics page and animation.
Anyway, check out what the black Superman costume looks like in the Arrowverse, courtesy of Stephen Amell…
So while it might be fun to assume that the reason Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman didn’t show up on Supergirl at all last season is because he was busy taking a dirt nap after getting killed by Doomsday and here he is, fresh from the grave in that snappy black and silver costume… that probably isn’t what is actually happening here. Instead, this is probably one of several alternate Earths we’re going to visit in the course of the “Elseworlds” crossover.
The clue here is that both Grant Gustin and Stephen Amell are wearing matching boots, which means they’re probably sporting some black uniforms of their own. Since those boots have some kinda menacing looking studs highlighting them, something tells me that the black suited Superman is leading some kind of “eeeevil” Justice League here. I could be wrong, of course, but it’s all I can think of right now.
In the US, the Arrowverse will visit “Elseworlds” when the crossover kicks off with a special episode of The Flash on the 9th of December, followed by Arrow on the 10th and Supergirl on the 11th. We can’t wait.
