Will Smith and Tom Holland voice the animated spy spoof

We’ve seen a lot of spy movies. We’ve seen a lot of spy comedy movies. We’ve even seen a lot of mismatched buddy spy comedy movies. But, to be fair, we haven’t seen a mismatched buddy spy comedy movie about a secret agent who gets turned into a pigeon.

Spies In Disguise comes from Blue Sky Studios, the folk who made Ice AgeRobotsThe Peanuts Movie and Ferdinand, and it tells the story of super-suave super-spy Lance Sterling (voiced by Will Smith) and what happens when he bumps into goofy scientist Walter Becket (Tom Holland).

The first trailer is here, and it looks suitably weird/cool/hilarious.

According to the official synopsis, the film will focus more on Lance and Walter’s mismatched buddy partnership than the whole pigeon thing. “Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is… not. But what Walter lacks in social skills he makes up for in smarts and invention, creating the awesome gadgets Lance uses on his epic missions. But when events take an unexpected turn, Walter and Lance suddenly have to rely on each other in a whole new way. And if this odd couple can’t learn to work as a team, the whole world is in peril.”

Smith and Holland lead the voice cast alongside Ben Mendelsohn, Karen Gillan, Rashida Jones, DJ Khaled and Masi Oka. the film is directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane in their directorial debut, but both have been working their way up the animation credits of Blue Sky for years.

Holland posted the trailer on Instagram and joked about not actually getting to meet his co-star.

Spies In Disguise is due out on September 19, 2019, so we’ve got a while to wait for this one unfortunately.
