This week, we’ve had reports that director Robert Zemeckis is in line to take on a new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches. But ahead of that, he’s got his latest, intriguing looking project to finish.
He’s directing Steve Carell in Welcome To Marwen, about a man who loses most of his memory following nearly being beaten to death. The man then, unable to afford or access proper therapy, decides to build a scale model of a Belgian town during World War II. And then he adds characters to it, right down to the people who attacked him.
This feels like just the kind of film that studios tend to avoid, and it’s credit to Universal and the clout of Zemeckis that it’s got made at all. The ensemble also includes Leslie Mann, Gwendolyn Christie, Diane Kruger, Eiza Gonzalez and Merritt Weaver. Zemeckis, meanwhile, co-wrote the screenplay with Caroline Thompson.
Here’s the trailer for the movie. We look forward to seeing it. It’s due later this year.
